Most urban churches are limited by space, and burial within the churchyard is unavailable. The Woodlands UMC is able to continue this tradition with Grace Garden Columbarium, a memorial garden and resting place for the cremated remains of our loved ones. The columbarium is an endowment of The Woodlands UMC Foundation, and the grounds are lovingly maintained by our church. 320 niches are available for church members and their families. When it’s time for you and your family to make your final provisions, contact the Facilities Coordinator, Dana Spencer, at dspencer@twumc.org or 281.297.5930 for more information about Grace Garden Columbarium.

Plans for pre-sale of niches for a new Columbarium wall should begin sometime in summer 2019. Please continue to check this posting for further updates and more details as they become available. Currently we do not have space available for purchase.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is a Columbarium?

The word “columbarium” comes from the Latin word “columbary” which is a structure for the nesting of doves - the dove being the symbol of God’s spirit and peace. The related word, columbarium, refers to a burial vault for the containment of urns holding cremated human remains.

Is cremation biblically sound?

Cremation is widely recognized as a theologically valid process for the deceased, and essentially is a hastening of the natural process that occurs following death. This ancient practice has particular relevance for us today, since burial near churches is less of an option. Cremation makes it possible to continue the tradition of granting a place for God’s children to “dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”

What are the benefits?

Families who choose cremation for their departed loved ones, rather than conventional burial, will find Grace Garden a wonderful choice. It’s dignified, convenient, and affordable. In addition, Grace Garden is very convenient for funeral ceremonies - funeral congregations can walk from the church to gather in the garden and visually take part in the inurnment service. Not only will the Memorial Garden be self-sustaining, but 100 percent of the proceeds from the purchase of each niche supports the many ministries of our church.

Who may use Grace Garden?

The garden is reserved exclusively for members of the church and their immediate families.

How is the property maintained?

The Columbarium is an endowment of The Foundation. The grounds are maintained under the perpetual care of our loving church family.

The Woodlands United Methodist Church campus can accommodate both small and large weddings. The Robb Chapel can accommodate up to 300 guests, our Harvest venue holds up to 1,000 guests, and our Sanctuary can accommodate up to 1,800 guests. Chrysostom Chapel is available for very small weddings up to 30 guests. View panoramas of some of our venues.

Schedule your wedding

Weddings can be scheduled up to 15 months in advance for church members and 9 months in advance for non-members. All weddings must be booked at least three months in advance. Once you’ve chosen a date, your rehearsal will be scheduled for the day prior to your wedding at either 5:00 p.m. or 6:30 p.m. You must be a member of The Woodlands United Methodist Church at least 60 days prior to your reserving the Church to receive "member status".

Fees

Please contact the Facilities Coordinator, Dana Spencer, at dspencer@twumc.org or 281.297.5930 for an updated fee schedule and deposit requirements. Your fee includes the following: pastor honorarium, wedding coordinator fee, church organist fee, Foundations for Marriage Premarital Seminar, Sound Technician fee, maintenance, security, custodial and room usage. Your balance is due one month prior to your wedding date (no exceptions). Initial deposit will not be refunded if the wedding is canceled within three months of the wedding date.

Ceremony Officiating

Ministers of The Woodlands United Methodist Church will officiate all weddings.

Wedding Coordinator

The Woodlands United Methodist Church wants to make your wedding worry and hassle free. With that in mind, you will be assigned a wedding coordinator to assist you with your needs at your rehearsal and wedding. Your wedding coordinator will meet with you twice prior to your wedding rehearsal. Any additional time required must be arranged between you and your wedding coordinator. Your wedding coordinator will conduct your one hour rehearsal. Outside wedding coordinators/planners are welcome; however, the coordinator assigned by The Woodlands United Methodist Church will coordinate the rehearsal and wedding. It is your responsibility to contact the coordinator once one is assigned to you to set up the initial meeting.

Music

Your service of marriage is a service of worship. The wedding therefore should reflect the God-centered focus that characterizes all worship services. The Woodlands United Methodist Church organist will be glad to suggest appropriate selections. You may, in addition, contract other musicians for your ceremony with approval of music selections from our music department and the minister. Recorded music and accompaniment tapes are not permitted. It is your responsibility to contact David McKenery the Church Organist to book an appointment.

Photography

We ask that the photographers and videographers not be on the altar area during the ceremony.

Premarital Counseling

The Woodlands United Methodist Church recommends you attend Foundations for Marriage. All couples are required to participate in one of the following premarital preparation class/counseling sessions:

  • The Woodlands United Methodist Church, Foundations for Marriage seminar and workshop. The fee for this seminar is included with your wedding package. If you choose not to attend this seminar, the fee is non-refundable.
  • A marriage preparation series of classes at another church.
  • Three couple sessions of pre-marriage work with the counselor of your choice.

In addition, all couples are requested to meet with the minister officiating their wedding at least one month prior to their wedding date to get acquainted and discuss specific plans for your ceremony. Please contact Kathy Creighton to schedule this appointment.

Decorations

Nothing is to be moved or rearranged on or near the altar area. If using pew decorations, please use caution on the wood, so not to scratch. All candles used must be supplied by the wedding party and be drip less with plastic sheeting placed under them for additional protection. We ask that all flowers, candles and decorations be removed immediately following your pictures.

Building Access

In addition to the use of the Chapel or Sanctuary for your wedding, you will also have access to one of our Brides Rooms, a grooms Room and an adult classroom. These additional rooms can be used for pre-wedding preparations and dressing. The building and assigned rooms will be open for your use two hours before and one hour after your wedding for Robb Chapel weddings. Your florist may begin decorating the two hours prior to your wedding. For Sanctuary weddings rooms will be available three hours before your start time. Due to additional reservations made in rooms, we ask that you promptly remove all decorations and belongings immediately following your ceremony. If you require additional time for preparation, you may reserve these rooms for $50 per hour if available.
